Whom v Who.

This is hilarious! I love Rowan Atkinson, especially as Mr Bean.

[uploaded to YouTube by fammka, who says ‘I am not the author of this film. The sketch comes from “Not The Nine o’Clock News” show and stars Rowan Atkinson.’]

And an interesting article announcing the impending death of whom – since no-one wants to sound like a pompous twerp. For Whom the Bell Tolls The inexorable decline of America’s least favorite pronoun.

  1. Hilarious. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in a skit where he played the ‘straight’ man. On the other hand, he can make me laugh with just his facial expressions.

… and I already know my grammar is awful 🙂

  2. I WILL NOT allow ‘whom’ to die, not in my usage.
There are times when it alone is correct; and those are the times when I shall continue to USE IT !!!!
(P.S. Yes, I know I’m old and boring; but I love our language, and not necessarily the way it is being lowered to some sort of LCD.)

  3. It’s genius, this sketch! Thank you for taking me back to my teens. ‘Not the 9 o’clock News’ was THE program to watch then. None of our parents quite ‘got it’ which only goes to show how humour changes through the generations.

  4. I love being so thick-witted sometimes. Despite being told in advance the “whom” topic, I was STILL surprised at the video’s ending, and loved it! Thank you for sharing this! I laughed really hard.

    I have learned I’m a pompous buffoon,
Because I still often use “whom”,
But at least I’m no stick,
    I’ve a flexible wit:
    “oon/oom” rhyme mismatch? Picayune. 🙂
